Creating a mesh
To create a polygonal model, either..
Start by creating a primitive
Or by drawing a polygon using “Mesh -> Create Polygon Tool”
Manipulating a polygonal mesh
Some of the most commonly used tools to modify the faces/edges/vertices are under the “Edit Mesh” Menu.
This tool allows you to create a volume by pulling faces out in a direction. By default, the manipulator is aligned with the Local space of the selected faces, with the Z(blue) axis being the Normal direction of the faces.
In some cases, you may want to extrude the faces out in a direction along one of the World axes. To do so, you change the manipulator by clicking a small circular thing near the manipulator.
Append Polygon Tool
Use this tool to fill a hole. First, click on a boundary edge of the hole. Purple arrows will appear. Follow the direction of the arrows and choose the second boundary edge to click on. A temporary pink surface will appear. Hitting “Enter” will turn the pink surface into a polygonal face.
Multi Cut Tool
Formerly known as the “Interactive Split Tool” in Maya 2014.
Insert Edge Loop
Rounded edges give the object an added level of realism. Select one or more edges, and apply Bevel. A polyBevel tab will be created. Adjust the attributes to suit your need.
